It is the court's job to decide if people are guilty or innocent, if their cases should be appealed or not and if laws are constitutional or not. They must try to be as fair and balanced as possible.
Cases begin in the district court in which a judge and jury decide if a person or group of people are guilty or innocent of a crime. If the defendant is not content with the ruling, they may take their case to the court of appeals where it may be retried. On issues that are of national or presidential importance, the supreme court gets involved and is the main decided on whether or not something is constitutional or not.
